Apple used its Wednesday “Surprise and Shine” event to lay out its AI strategy under new CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as Cook moves into the role of executive chairman. Ternus argued that no device is better positioned to serve as an “intelligent personal hub” for AI than the iPhone, citing its processing power, display, cameras, connectivity, and integration with other Apple devices and services. He also emphasized that Apple prioritizes data privacy more than competitors, noting that Apple Intelligence runs on-device whenever possible rather than relying on collecting and storing user data externally.
Among the announcements was Apple Reference Image, a new authentication feature for the iPhone 18 Pro that captures signed sensor data when a photo is taken, which Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service converts into an unalterable reference version stored in the Photos app. The feature allows later versions of an image to be compared against this reference to detect alterations, and Apple said it is opening APIs for developers while also supporting the SynthID standard for identifying AI-generated or altered images. The iPhone 18 Pro also received a major camera upgrade, including a variable-aperture 48-megapixel main camera built using six laser-cut blades and a custom lens system.
Apple also introduced a redesigned Health app powered by Apple Intelligence, featuring a new Insights tab, a “readiness” score, and a “Health Age” calculation drawing on metrics like VO2 max, sleep, and blood biomarkers. A new Longevity tab incorporates Apple Watch and iPhone data alongside lab results, supported by a partnership with Quest offering a 50-biomarker panel for $119.
The company’s long-anticipated foldable iPhone, Duo, was also unveiled, with chief hardware officer Johny Sroujiexplaining that AI algorithms were used during manufacturing to precisely match each hinge to its housing for proper alignment, while laser scanning and 3D printing techniques helped eliminate surface irregularities.
Additionally, Apple’s new Apple Watch models introduced always-available audio processing features, including Live Rewind and Siri Recap, which use on-device AI to transcribe or summarize nearby conversations. Apple said raw audio is never stored or accessible, transcripts are encrypted, and speakers are not identified, though the features raise questions around consent and how normalized ambient listening technology may become. Apple maintained that its approach reflects a broader effort to balance AI-driven utility with user privacy across its product lineup.
